Lahaina, Maui

Oceanfront Lahaina, Maui

Lahiana is located on the west side of the Northern part of Maui. It is centrally located for access into the resort areas of Kaanapali and Kapalua.

Truly, when staying in one of these resorts, you should expect to go into Lahaina
for groceries, most resteraunts as well as sightseeing and/or snorkeling excursions.

Lahaina has been a city for a very long time. It was originally called Lele.
It is unclear when and why the name changed to the current Lahaina.

The city was overtaken in the 1790's by Kamehameha the Great.
In the early 1800's (1820 - 1845) it was the Capital city of the Royal Kingdom of Hawaii.

Missionaries came from the "New World" and settled in Lahaina around 1823.
Additionally, Lahaina was the central gathering point for Whalers during the mid 19th century.

All of these influences shaped Lahaina, as well as Maui. Many times the interests of these groups differed which led to confrontations and conflicts. On several occasions, minor battles resulted.

In downtown Lahaina, there are many resteraunts, such as Bubba Gump's and Cheesburger in Paradise. Additionally, there are many shops that are geared toward tourists.

Also, there is a large Banyan tree at the North end of town, at the end of Front Street. It was planted in 1873 to commemorate the 50th aniversary of the missionaries arrival in Maui. The tree is located in Banyan Tree Park, and covers almost 2/3 of an acre. Banyan Tree in Lahaina, Maui
